What Are the Two Types of Compounding?

Batch Compounding Outsourcing Facility

Batch compounding is bulk production of a formulation in small to large batches for sale to physicians, healthcare facilities, and other pharmacies. The FDA designates businesses that batch compound as 503B pharmacies and they are federally regulated.

What Types of Medications Do 503B Outsourcing Facilities Provide?

503B outsourcing facilities are large-scale FDA-regulated facilities that manufacture in bulk. They compound drugs, but not for you individually. They manufacture large batches of medications to be sold to doctors’ offices, clinics, hospitals, and other health facilities for use on-site only. They do not sell products directly to you as a patient or sell medications that would be administered to you outside of a medical facility. The medications made at a 503B outsourcing facility can address similar concerns such as hormone replacement, but on a larger scale and without a specific patient in mind.
